A Step Back In Time
Saturday Nights at 1am on Future Radio 96.9fm.
I have always been into music largely from my father who used to play me Jazz, and Rhythm and Blues. He has a large enviable collection of vinyl himself, so music was always at the forefront of my life. Having close, older cousins helped, and at the age of six I was already recording the chart shows on Radio 1 MW as it was then! As early Electronic Music exploded in the early 80s I was influenced in Kraftwerk through my cousins and Tangerine Dream and Gary Numan. I suppose for me the "day of conversion!" came when I started constructing aerials and picking up pirate stations like LWR, J-FM and Kiss, later Sunrise, Centreforce and Fantasy FM, as I was living near London. I was hooked coming home from school and literally taping and taping and listening. I was extremely fortunate in that I had already hooked up with an older guy called Paul W who ran a mobile disco and had been the general dogs body lugging records and speakers and getting the odd chance to play Soul and Funk, Pure Groove and Chart music on the decks and presenting whenever I had the chance. From listening to the pirates I would save all my money and buy record after record selling tapes at school of the pirates.
Starting, out like most aspiring DJs did, with a battered non pitch belt driven Pioneer deck and then moving through many mixers, to belt drive and pitch decks, to the industry standard Technics 1200s and now as technology has evolved to CDJS and Abbleton.
I think through sheer determination and like minded friends I had the opportunity to play at events and some great stations and now as part of the Future Radio Team.
My show is called A Step Back In Time, where I play OldSkool from early Electro right through all the genres of Dance and House Music. Interviewing Promoters, Producers and DJS who shaped the Dance Music scene. My style is informative, combining presentation, late night interaction in a one to one relationship with the listener. I try to imagine it like a special friend who has had the opportunity to be invited into someone's home and influence and shape their taste and perhaps make them smile, laugh or even cry in a magical hour format. It may seem a bit deep, but then that's the power of the radio if used properly.
