Boiling Point

with Keith Slater

Boiling Point is based around music from more tropical climates, West African latin/highlife-rare Afrobeat and Ethio Jazz -Cuban, Columbian, Angolan and Brazilian latin, rockin r'n'b an jukejoint blues-rocksteady and funky dancehall reggae.

I started out in the Beccles/Lowestoft area in the early 70s and was a regular at Arthurs nightclub in Lowestoft where I got to see most of the Trojan label reggae acts of the time and many top soul groups at the South Pier and at the Melody Rooms and Crockers in Norwich .

In the late 70s i started regular djing and travelled to the Northern soul allniters and to the great funk nights at Canvey island Goldmine.

In 1980 i made my first trip of many to New Orleans Jazz Festival which along with some older mates influenced me to start collecting rythmn n blues- jazz-african and latin records.

In 81 i moved back to Norwich and set up a Friday and Saturday club at the then Festival house covering mainly soul/reggae and RnB.
In 82 i set up the Jolly Butchers Club still considered by many as the best club nite Norwich has ever had and probably was the forerunner of the excellant Gas Station and Marvel nites in the 90s.

By this time i was getting in guest djs who were specialist collectors in their field mixing independent southern soul with studio one reggae-swamp blues with rockin RnB-ska with zydeco. This all finished suddenly when the club got sold and i moved on to the Jaquard and the Ironmongers Arms where I filled the famous soul juke box up with some rare classics from my trips to the USA and my Black America's Beat mail order list.

I set up the Juicy Fruit nights starting at the Rose Tavern and then moving on to the Cafe Da on Bedford St and eventually resting at the Playhouse and I started to bring in a lot of new jazz dance, organic soul and Afrobeat into my sets.

Now i've had a couple of years off and it's helped me to reassess what
records i love most. The result is my Boiling Point monthly night at Take 5 cellar bar on which this show is based around.
