Tony Cleary

Hear me talkin' to ya

Every Sunday 1pm - 2pm
Tony Cleary will be 'talkin to ya' about jazz ancient and modern as well as bringing guests from the world of jazz. Local jazz is alive and well so he'll bring in the great and the good from around and about Norfolk. New releases will be featured as well as the oldies from the archives. If there are good gigs to visit then let him know.

Profile:

As well as playing jazz bass and trombone Tony has been in broadcasting over twenty years, with Future Radio since it started and with BBC Radio Norfolk for ten years during which time he interviewed some of the greatest names in jazz. He presents a news and current affairs programme for the visually handicapped, his voice is sometimes heard on voice overs and was often seen acting at the Maddermarket in Norwich. His experience in playing jazz has brought him into contact with many local bands and especially backing professional guests at gigs.

Tony started playing at the age of 17 when he lived in Africa, then all through college days in London, eventually in Norfolk. He is also principal double bass in a local symphony orchestra. "I've always thought that when you play jazz it comes from the heart ; dots are helpful if not essential but improvising is like flying a plane - the sky's the limit. Keep to the rhythm, the right key and have the tune in mind. After that it's up to you" Tony said when asked about improvising jazz.
