Home/Boy

22 Jun 2009 (All day) - 25 Jul 2009 (All day)

Dugald is a gay New Zealand/British artist working on solo, collaborative and commissioned pieces in both fine arts and performance. His painting exhibits the strong influence of the South Pacific shown through his treatment of light and colour.

Home/Boy includes an eclectic selection of his work curated to portray a utopian ideal of domesticity. The intense colour and composition are constantly undermined by the crude use of object, homo-eroticism in appropriated sports imagery and a sense of frenetic action in small confined spaces using paint, collage, model making and a dose of sexual repression. From vibrant still lives of flowers built with the compromised bodies of sportsmen to a murky lily pond's writhing mass of inhabitants just registering on the surface, all the pieces are invested with a strong sense of movement and energy.

Dugald's approach to painting experiments with deconstruction of shape, use of patterning and bold mark-making in order to create a tension between the illusion of a picture and the technique through which it is produced. With influences including Grecian sexual imagery, David Hockney, rugby, Robert Maplethorpe and the Wizard of Oz - Home/ Boy is a Gay exhibition exploding style, home-life and bunches of flowers.
