A Step Back In Time Show Saturday 28th May 2011 Bank Holiday Special

By DJ Sterling - Posted on 27 May 2011

Hi,

This week I have dug in the crates showcasing one of my favourite labels "Naked Music." I have picked out some of their best known releases, played of course on vinyl, to showcase some of their past anthemic releases.

Naked Music, located in San Francisco and New York, is known for smooth signature Deep House and Down Tempo grooves. It began life as a production company in New York, in 1992, when founders Dave Boonshoft and Jay Denes scored underground success with releases on Independent labels such as Francois Kevorkian’s Wave Music, and UK’s XL Recordings. A string of high profile remixes followed with artists as diverse as Sade, Kelis, Maxwell and Britney Spears. Blue Six is the alias of producer Jay Denes, whose debut album, Beautiful Tomorrow, delivered a mix of Deep House, Soulful Pop, and Smooth Jazz In 1998 the production company officially became a true record label and released Naked Music

Artists Include:

Lisa Shaw

Blue Six (aka Jay Denes)

Gaelle

Aya (aka Lysa Aya Ternier)

Aquanote

Eric Stamile

Miguel Migs

Monique Bingham

Guy Malul

Around 2000 Naked Music entered into a joint venture with EMI/Virgin. Signing a few wonderful artists and made their records. Blue Six, Lisa Shaw, Aya, Miguel Migs, Gaelle, and a number of others. Over multiple 12” releases and albums, kept a consistently high standard of song writing with top-notch production while steadily refining their basic aesthetic sense Many of their CDs have achieved have a lasting “cult” status. Naked music isn’t just brilliant music, but also great artwork and cover designs created by once unknown American (Student) artists.

Naked Music were the epitome of originality since there inception. they bubbled on the underground but you can't keep quality a secret for long. Their releases were little events, the sheer class of production, attention to graphic design, even their website is amazing.

Naked music in my opinion is the best Deep House label around. It is my favourite house label for a number of reasons. The term 'naked' means to me sexy, smooth, clean and beautiful and this is exactly what you get from every naked music releases. Pure beautiful and smooth music made from the soul.

Another thing which is great about the label is the artwork of the covers. They are brilliant and show how much effort is put into each and every release. The artwork gives each release a unique feel.

Most naked music singles come with a number of different mixes. The mixes are always excellent and have different approaches. This is great for djs allowing them to choose a mix to fit into a set or match the mood as well as possible.

Even when Naked went for a slightly different approach with the Tech House release 'Trentemoller EP', they still seemed to hit the spot and produced a wonderful piece of vinyl. This is highly respected by many Tech House fans. A lot of credit must go to Trentemoller.

Everything Naked Music touches is golden. Whether you're with your closest friends sharing a fine drink and some real times, or alone with your object of desire, the words that Naked's unmatched tune selections conjure up would sound something like: 'intimate,' 'seductive,' 'disinhibiting,' and so on. In a word: 'Naked,' in all it's aural beauty. The vast majority of Naked releases are sophisticated layers of Down-to-Mid Tempo Groove, Soul, Jazz, Deep-Lined House which allow you to dance if you like, and still allow you to hold a conversation if you wish. And if you're by yourself, the music will keep you company, and you can explore it.
Standout collections include the initial Carte Blanche, Bare Essentials Vol. 2, and Nude Dimensions Vol. 2, but these are just the best of the brilliant. All of it is absolutely premium stuff. The care and attention Naked Music put into each release's selection, mixing, and production has my utmost respect and appreciation both as a dj and a music listener.
